Getting stuck is part of learning.
Staying stuck doesn’t have to be.

We’re Frank and Debra, and between us we’ve spent more than 25 years helping children get to grips with the things they thought they couldn’t do.But tuition isn’t only about getting unstuck. Sometimes a child needs more challenge, wants to push further, or is capable of more than their current results suggest.Alongside our own teaching, we use CENTURY, a highly effective learning platform that helps us find gaps, build skills and track progress. It gives us a clear picture of what each child needs, so we can focus our teaching where it will make the biggest difference. We offer Primary English and Maths, 11+ and Secondary Maths to GCSE - taught personally, patiently and without fuss.

Primary English and Maths.

Strong foundations and growing confidence come from teaching that meets children where they are. English underpins almost everything a child does at school: if reading and language skills aren’t secure, accessing the rest of the curriculum becomes much harder. We work on the essentials - from phonics, spelling, punctuation and grammar to comprehension and creative writing - while encouraging confident reading and, ideally, a genuine enjoyment of books. In maths, we focus on developing a strong sense of number and getting children thinking mathematically, rather than simply learning methods by rote. We work at each child’s level and pace, filling gaps where needed and providing plenty of challenge where they’re ready for more, while keeping our teaching firmly in step with the current primary curriculum.

11+ Preparation

The right preparation makes all the difference when it comes to the 11+. We have many years of experience preparing children for grammar school entrance exams - both as teachers and as parents, having guided our own three children through the process. We prepare pupils for the Future Stories (FSCE) tests now used by North Halifax Grammar School, The Crossley Heath School and Heckmondwike Grammar School, developing the English, maths, reasoning and exam skills they need to approach the tests with confidence.

Secondary Maths to GCSE

Making maths make sense is at the heart of what we do. If the foundations are shaky, we go back to where the problems first began - however far back that might be - and build securely from there. Number, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion aren’t just topics to tick off: they’re the building blocks of mathematical thinking. We combine our own teaching with carefully chosen, up-to-date online resources to create work that’s right for each student. As GCSE approaches, we introduce plenty of exam-style work and graded questions from real papers, building understanding alongside exam confidence. For the most able students, we can stretch them beyond Higher GCSE level, including preparation for Level 2 Further Mathematics.

About Us

We’re Frank and Debra Page - husband and wife, teachers, tutors and parents of three grown-up daughters. Frank trained and worked as a primary teacher, while Debra trained in secondary education, and between us we have more than 25 years of experience in teaching and private tuition. Together we established and ran three Kip McGrath Education Centres in West Yorkshire, working with children from primary age through to GCSE - all while bringing up our own three daughters. Education and family life have always gone hand in hand for us. Wainhouse Tutors brings that experience back to a smaller, more personal setting, where we can concentrate on what we enjoy most: teaching, getting to know our students and helping them make real progress.

"Debra and Frank have a fantastic talent for putting their students at ease, speaking on their level and supporting them to achieve the best outcomes. They helped my son increase his confidence and knowledge and achieved a result in his exams beyond what we could have imagined."
